Head size explained: 98 vs 100 square inches

Head size is one of the biggest factors in how a racket feels. A larger head (around 100 sq in) gives a bigger sweet spot and more easy power, which makes it forgiving on off-centre hits.

A smaller head (around 98 sq in) trades some of that forgiveness for precision. Many improving players find they can place the ball more accurately, but they need to supply more of their own pace.

If you're unsure, demo one of each back-to-back — the difference is usually obvious within a couple of sessions.

Weight and balance: why two 300g rackets can feel completely different

Unstrung weight tells only part of the story. Where that weight sits — the balance — changes how heavy the racket feels in your hand.

Head-light rackets feel quicker at the net and easier to manoeuvre. Head-heavy rackets feel more stable and help drive the ball through the court.

Heavier frames absorb more shock and feel more solid, but can tire your arm if you're not used to them. Playing with a racket for a full week is the best way to judge this.

Open vs dense string patterns

An open string pattern (such as 16x19) lets the strings move and snap back more, which helps generate spin and a livelier feel.

A denser pattern (such as 18x20) gives a more controlled, predictable response and often makes strings last longer.

Spin-heavy baseliners tend to enjoy open patterns; flatter hitters who like precision often prefer denser ones.

How to get the most out of your 7-day demo

Play at least two or three sessions — first impressions can be misleading, and it often takes a session to adjust.

Try a mix of drills, serves and match play so you see how the racket behaves under pressure, not just in a relaxed rally.

Jot down a few notes after each session: comfort, power, control and how your arm feels. If you demo a second racket (half price), compare your notes side by side.
